ABSTRACT

A male baby with intrauterine growth retardation had a short neck, small hands and feet, hypospadia, both grade I hydronephrosis, type II atrial septal defect, and moderate valvular pulmonary stenosis. The routine chromosome and banding analyses revealed a 46,XY,rec(8)del(8)(p21)dup(8) (q24.1)inv(8)(p21q24.1)pat chromosome constitution. His mother has normal chromosomes, but the father had 46,XY,inv(8)(p21q24.1). Also his uncle had an inv(8) chromosome constitution. We used lymphocytes and examined 40 mitotic cells. All mitotic cells showed deletion of 8p21-->pter and duplication of 8q24.1-->qter. Because 8p21 involves secretion of macrophage and lymphocyte against cancer cells, long-term follow-up for cancer will be needed.

ABSTRACT

Authors performed transscleral diode laser retinopexy to evaluate its safety and efficacy in human eyes. Transscleral diode laser retinopexy was performed on 75 human eyes of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Power setting ranged from 400 to 1,000 mW, duration setting ranged from 0.5 to 1.0 second, and average 107 laser spots(range 15-443 laser spots) were applied. Seventy four of 75 eyes(98.7%) achieved anatomical success in reattachment after 6 months follow-up period. Complications of treatment encountered were minor Bruch's membrane rupture in 2 eyes, small retinal hemorrhage in one eye and mild scleral thermal burn in one eye. These complications did not affect adversely the surgical results. Among the 75 eyes, 21 eyes underwent diode laser choroidotomy for drainage of subretinal fluid with success. Transscleral diode laser retinopexy was considered as a safe and effective mean to obtain chorioretinal adhesion in retinal detachment surgery.

ABSTRACT

In selected cases of central serous chorioretinopathy the pigment epithelial defect can be sealed with laser photocoagulation. The authors analyzed the effectiveness of laser photocoagulation on visual improvement and duration of the disease in laser treated group, as compared to untreated group, which represented na tural course of the disease. A verage healing time was 5.2 weeks in treated group and 13.9 weeks in untreated group, which revealed statistically significant difference between two groups(p<0.01). No difference was noted in visual outcome between two groups. The initial visual acuity was influenced by the type of dye leaking, the distance of leaking point from center of fovea and the size of sensory retinal detachment in fluorescein angiography. But the final visual acuity was only ihfluenced by the size of sensory retinal detachment. The number and location of leaking point did not influence the initial and final visual acuity in both treated and untreated group.

ABSTRACT

Adjustable suture strabismus surgery was performed in 4 cases of horizontal strabismus from February, 1987 to July. 1938. We evaluated the type of strabismus. the chance and effect of adjustment, and the results of deviation in 31 cases which were followed up mean 6 months(minimum 2 months and maximum 14 months). We also analyzed the results in 15 cases of conventional recession-resection operation in large-angled horizontal strabismus(mean follow-up; 16.2 months). The results were as follows: 1. The angle of deviation before operation was minimum 30 prism to maximum over 90 prism, and large-angled(over 45 prism) strabismus 22 cases(71.0%). Associated ocular abnormalities were amblyopia(20 cases), anisometropia(9 cases), corneal leukoma(2 cases), aphakia(2 cases), and retinal disease(2 cases). 2. The methods of adjustable suture were Schwartz technique(21 cases), Jampolsky's (10 cases). Adjustment was performed 13 of 31 cases. 3. The cases of success in Schwartz technique were 15 of 21 cases and in Jampolsky's 4 of 10 cases. The cases of success with adjustment were 9 of 13 cases and without adjustment were 10 of 18 cases. 4. The results of 15 cases in the conventional surgery were 5 cases of success, 2 cases of improvement, and 8 cases of failure.
